1. Can you share your journey and what inspired you to become a Manager in HR and Payroll?

My journey began with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from St. Xavier’s College, Thumba. I started my career as a Process Associate, a role I held for over a decade. While working, I was introduced to payroll management, and it immediately clicked for me. It wasn’t just about numbers; it was about ensuring employees felt secure and valued. That realization drove me to pursue a career in HR, and for the last seven years, I’ve been with CloudQ, specializing in HR and payroll. It’s been such a rewarding journey, and I love the combination of technical precision and people management it brings.

2. What’s one aspect of your expertise in HR and payroll that most employees or teams might not know but should?

Payroll is so much more than calculations—it’s about building trust. When employees receive their salaries accurately and on time, it builds a foundation of confidence in the organization. What most people don’t see are the checks and balances behind the scenes to make this happen seamlessly, but that trust is what drives me every day.

3. What do you enjoy most about managing HR processes and ensuring smooth payroll operations?

I genuinely enjoy problem-solving and knowing that my work directly impacts employees’ lives. Whether it’s addressing a query, resolving an issue, or ensuring payroll runs smoothly, I find satisfaction in the clarity and peace of mind it brings to others. It’s a role where I can blend empathy with precision, and that’s what I love most.

4. How do you start your day to ensure a productive and focused mindset for handling HR and payroll tasks?

I start my day by reviewing my calendar and setting clear priorities—what needs immediate attention and what can wait. I also make it a point to scan my emails early on to clear smaller tasks and avoid distractions later. Before diving in, I take a few moments for mindfulness or deep breathing. It helps me center myself, especially when I know the day is going to be hectic.

5. When faced with challenges in HR or payroll management, do you prefer a proactive or reflective approach?

I believe in a balance. Being proactive helps avoid a lot of potential issues, but reflection is equally as important to understand what went wrong and how we can improve. For me, it’s about finding solutions quickly but also taking the time to learn from each situation.

6. If you could describe your HR and payroll management style in three words, what would they be?

Organized, empathetic, and detail-oriented. I think those three words capture my approach perfectly. I focus on structure, care about people, and pay attention to the smallest details.

7. Can you tell us about a particularly complex HR or payroll issue you’ve handled and how you successfully resolved it?

One instance that stands out was when a last-minute policy change required major adjustments to payroll calculations, just days before the cycle was due. It was a challenge coordinating with multiple departments and ensuring accuracy under a tight deadline, but by staying calm and organized, we managed to pull it off without any errors. It was a stressful experience, but it reinforced the importance of teamwork and communication.

8. What aspect of your work in HR and payroll energizes you the most?

It’s the problem-solving aspect. I love finding solutions, streamlining processes, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Knowing that my work directly contributes to employee satisfaction and organizational success is incredibly motivating.

9. Do you have a favorite mantra or quote that keeps you motivated during busy payroll cycles or HR challenges?

“Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.” It reminds me to focus on both accuracy and prioritization, especially during high-pressure moments.

10. If you could work from anywhere in the world as a Manager in HR and Payroll, where would it be and why?

I’d love to work from a quiet coastal town—somewhere serene where I could enjoy the calmness of the ocean. I think such an environment would complement the structured nature of my work and help me stay balanced.

11. What’s a non-work-related skill or hobby that you’re proud of, and how does it influence your professional approach to HR and payroll?

Mindfulness is a practice I’ve developed over the years, and it has been a game-changer. It helps me stay calm under pressure, focus better, and approach challenges with clarity.

12. How do you prefer to celebrate a successful payroll cycle or achieving a major HR milestone?

I’m all about small, meaningful celebrations—like a team lunch or a simple thank-you note to the team. It’s not about grand gestures but about recognizing and appreciating everyone’s hard work.

13. If you weren’t in HR and payroll, what other profession do you think you’d excel in?

I think I’d do well in financial analysis or project management. Both fields require a structured, detail-oriented approach, which aligns with my strengths.

14. Who has had the biggest impact on your career, and what’s the most valuable advice they’ve given you?

My first mentor had a profound impact on me. They taught me that transparency and precision are non-negotiable in payroll management, and that advice has stayed with me throughout my career.

15. Do you have any evening routines or rituals to unwind after a busy day of managing HR and payroll tasks?

I like to take a walk or spend some time with a good book. It’s my way of disconnecting and recharging for the next day.

16. What advice would you give to someone just starting in HR and payroll management?

Master the basics—understanding compliance and processes is crucial. But beyond that, approach your work with empathy. HR and payroll are about people, and when you remember that, everything else falls into place.
